Shelley-
As always, you "tell it like it is" so eloquently. Yasher koach to you, and also to your husband for becoming Jewish! Never knew that about him!
Take care

Shelly, thanks for sharing your frustrating, remarkable, and inspiring story. "Treat each person as a unique individual. Teach each child according to his or her needs. Parents, educators and the student work together as a team." Those ideas seem so basic, and yet it's so rare to see them embraced. Thanks for the work that you do to help bring those messages and values to more people in our communities.

Jason, I love the way you connected these concepts from the parsha to describe the double-edged sword: What makes us different -- strange -- can be both our greatest strength, and our greatest vulnerability. Torah usually tells us to do things because our innate instincts would have us do something else. (It's handy to remind my teenage sons that the Ten Commandments say to honor their parents.) Most people's instinct upon encountering someone different --physically, neurologically, or otherwise -- is to avoid contact. It's too scary. We don't know what to say or do. The people who take the time and effort to sit down with my son Ezra and get to know him are always glad they did. Thanks for reminding us of what Torah has to say about this. What a perfect basis for this month of reminding people to embrace, to include, and to love.
